The Hubble Deep Field: The Most Important Image Ever Taken

Here’s a YouTube video on the most important image ever taken by the Hubble, along with an explaination. Interesting, very interesting, and puts into perspective the size of our universe. But what clicked with me is the mathematical improbability that we are the ONLY planet in the universe with life, let along habitable.

You see, our sun has nine, er, eight planets. That makes up our solar system. Now just within our quadrant of our galaxy, there are several million stars, each with the probability of one or several planets. That’s just one part of our galaxy. Now there are millions or galaxies. What’s the probability that our single, lonely sun is the only sun in the entire universe, let alone our galaxy, with a planet that sustains life? Wow…

BRINGO : Stop Talking to Machines and Talk to a Real Human

Yes, it works…
Tired of dialing 1-800 numbers and not being able to get through to a human who can help you?

BRINGO cuts through all of that so you don’t have to. That’s right, BRINGO has conquered phone trees.

Here’s how it works:

1. Find the company you’d like to call by category (credit cards, mortgages, loans, health care)
2. Enter your phone # (we will never disclose your phone number to anyone, not even your mother!).
3. Wait a few seconds while we navigate the phone tree.
4. When we call you back, pick up your phone and you’re done. No more phone trees.

Guardian | $100bn later, Star Wars hits its first missile

Wow, after $100 Billion (whoohahaa), we tack on $89M more and finally hit something. Now realistically, outside of our cold war nemesis, who has a delivery system that can reach the continential US? (Not too worried about Alaska, they can have Ted Stevens). But seriously, after $100Bn we finally hit a target with a known size, and predetermined speed and timing? And when we build this system, we’ll be defended against who again? BTW, the Marines want to go forward with their $117,000 open-air jeep that has absolutely no protection for our troops. But they say it’s not for environments like Iraq where there’s roadside bombs everyday. It more for what, casual driving on I95 or neighborhood bike trails? Stay tuned for the latest fleecing of our tax dollars.

The Pentagon claimed a victory for America’s missile defence system last night when a mock warhead was successfully destroyed in space in a test which cost $85m (£45m).

A target missile was launched from Kodiak island, Alaska, yesterday morning. Seventeen minutes later, an interceptor missile left a silo in California, hitting the target above the Pacific Ocean at a speed of 18,000mph.

Military chiefs hailed the test as a “total success” for the defence system, originally known as Star Wars, which has been plagued by political opposition and technical troubles since it began in 1983.

A real interceptor missile has never before successfully destroyed a target missile. In the previous such attempts, in 2004 and 2005, the rockets jammed in their silos. “What we did today is a huge step in terms of our systematic approach to continuing to … develop a missile defence system for the United States, for our allies, our friends, our deployed forces around the world,” said Lieutenant General Henry Oberling, the Pentagon’s missile defence chief. He said the system now had a “good chance” of shooting down a real enemy long-range missile. “I feel a lot safer and sleep a lot better at night,” he said.

Critics dispute the Bush administration’s claim that the system, which has cost almost $100bn to date, is vital to protect against attacks from “rogue states” such as North Korea. They argue that the end of the cold war rendered the scheme obsolete, and the test was unrealistic because the military knew the size, speed, and timing of the missile at which they were aiming.

The Pentagon said the interception was only a secondary aim of yesterday’s test: the main point had been to gather and analyse data. But since the test was declared a success before any data had been analysed, opponents suggested it had been partly a public relations exercise.

“It makes you wonder how serious they are about the primary purpose of the test,” Philip Coyle, the Pentagon’s chief weapons-tester during Bill Clinton’s presidency, told Reuters.

Lt Gen Oberling refused to reveal the military’s judgment of whether the system in its current form could destroy a North Korean missile aimed at America. In July, Pyongyang unsuccessfully tried to test a Taepodong 2 missile believed to be capable of reaching the north-west US.

“What we saw today was a very realistic trajectory for the threat, for the target, and [for] intercept speeds,” Lt Gen Obering said. “We don’t know … what a Taepodong 2 is going to look like or perform.”

BBC NEWS | Row over Bush TV 'assassination'

You know, I’m gonna tread lightly on this one. Not going ot make any comments, suggestions or opinions. Not touching this one with a ten foot pole…not with our phone being recorded…

A British television channel has been criticised as “irresponsible” for making a drama in which US President George Bush is assassinated.

Death of a President, on More4, uses actors and computer effects to portray the president being shot dead during an anti-war rally in Chicago in 2007.

The makers of the 90-minute film said they used the event to explore the effects of the War on Terror on the US.

But John Beyer, of TV watchdog MediaWatch, said it was irresponsible.

He said it could even trigger a real assassination attempt and told the Daily Mirror: “There’s a lot of feeling against President Bush and this may well put ideas into people’s heads.” A White House spokesman said of the programme: “We are not going to comment because it does not dignify a response.”

Christian Zionists form a growing part of the pro-
Israel lobby in the United States, the Jewish state\’s main ally. They believe the return of Jews to the Holy Land and establishment of Israel are proof of God\’s promises to biblical patriarchs.

Churches in the Middle East often appear closer to the Palestinians, whose Christian minority makes up a substantial portion of their clergy in the region.

The “Jerusalem Declaration on Christian Zionism” was signed by Latin Patriarch Michel Sabbah, a Palestinian, and by bishops of the Episcopal, Evangelical Lutheran and Syrian Orthodox Churches in Jerusalem.

Many Christian Zionists are evangelical Protestants, and the declaration is a sign of a growing struggle between the groups.

“The Christian Zionist programme provides a world view where the Gospel is identified with the ideology of empire, colonialism and militarism,” said the declaration, accusing Christian Zionists of hurting hopes for Middle East peace.

“We reject the teachings of Christian Zionism that facilitate and support these policies as they advance racial exclusivity and perpetual war,” the declaration added.

The three main Christian Zionist groups in Jerusalem said in a statement that they were concerned at the declaration\’s “inflammatory language” and that it was far from the truth.

West Bank, the cradle of Jewish civilization, which Palestinians want as part of an independent state.

Holy Land churches attack Christian Zionism – Bush will respond swiftly …

Does this mean the George W. Bush will add the Vatican to the Axis of Evil list? Question is, how many troops will it take to take over Vatican City, and will our soldiers need visas to pass through Rome?

AP Wire | 08/30/2006 | CBS magazine slims down Couric in photo

Is there no end to the network news sensationalism? now that CBS has adopted the Ken and Barbie News Hour format like MSNBC, CNN and th others, they ensure that they will go one step further.

No, Katie Couric didn’t suddenly lose 20 pounds. The incoming “CBS Evening News” anchor appears significantly thinner in a network promotional magazine photo thanks to digital airbrushing.

The touched-up photo of Couric dressed in a striped business suit appears on the inside of the September issue of Watch! which is distributed at CBS stations and on American Airlines flights.

CBS News President Sean McManus said he was “obviously surprised and disappointed when I heard about it.”, or when he realized they got caught. Here’s a tip for you CBS, Skinny blonds are usually thought of as being dumb, so you may wan tto keep Katie a bit plump to add credibility to the news show. The only role she would be acceptable as being so skinny is the evening weather bunny.

Now before everyone gets bent out of shape, this isn’t a post about Katie, it’s about our news programs and the chase for advertising dollars regardless of the cost to public service and credibility.

The original picture was snapped in May and was widely circulated to the media as an official photo of Couric.
