An Example of Music Worth Buying…..

cuongvu1Just received the new (six years old) CD from Cuong Vu, titled It’s Mostly Residual. Got it from Artist Share, where the money actually goes to the artist. Artist Share is a really nice concept, You can collaborate and provide input into an artist’s project and contribute accordingly. The god thing about Artist Share is that you know the music will be recorded and mastered with great quality, and the artists themselves are putting everything into what they are doing. Totally different from the here today, gone tomorrow commercial music made for the masses.

Cuong Vu can be best described as “massively” progressive Jazz, as best as I can judge it. This CD is a mix of eclectic sounds and a great dynamic range, melodies and paces from a trio. Cuong is a trumpeter and plays it well. And the drummer….wow. I hope to catch these guys someday at the Vanguard. I also purchased the recently released CD, Cuong Vu Vu-Vet but hasn’t arrived yet. One thing about Artist Share that I’ve provided feedback one, is the ability to download the music in .FLAC lossless format, not just compressed MP3.

So what’s the first thing you do when a new CD shows up? Use Exact Audio Copy to make FLAC files. Why? First, you need to make a backup for when the physical media wears out or gets damaged. Second, to use on the Squeezebox.

Pledging beyond the limit…

Now this is interesting. On paper, half of the $700 billion financial rescue package has been spent, but it seems the Treasury Department has committed nearly $10 billion in additional TARP money before it’s been released by Congress. So are we not learning anything from this? When parts of the government is used to spending money it doesn’t have, what message is that? I truly hope the additional $350B is heavily scrutinized with loads of requirements and caveats to whoever receives it. I was reading another article where officials are stating that there is no way of accounting for what has already been spent. Just last week, American Express received over $3B as they are now a “bank”. But they have not disclosed what they have or will do with the money. My thoughts? Executive retention bonuses for those execs that are critical to the success of the company. The same ones who got us into this mess. Basically, Paulson over at the treasury is there simply to help out his buddies, nothing more…..

So here's an idea on how to spend some of that bailout money…properly

So here’s some ideas on how to spend the money. First, let the big 3 fail and restructure, and get rid of those unions.

Next, invest in broadband and wireless broadband communications. Treat it like infrastructure where it’s government owned (I know, a sore point) but contracted out to private companies to architect, engineer, build and maintain. Same as we do with our roads and military. Things that are of national interest is owned by the people, and fully contracted out to the private sector, with joint public/private oversight.
Next effort is to do the same with a national rail system. There’s no reason why GM and Ford can’t build trains alongside GE. This diversifies GM and Ford, building cars and trains and whatever else. And for the airline industry that will throw a fit over this, there’s no reason why they can’t be contracted to operate rail lines like they operate airlines. This would follow the same model of infrastructure ownership by the govt., and have everything contracted out.
I also think utilities should fall into the same category, especially nuclear. I don’t think this is a communist or socialist idea. I think its more of a jumpstart for capitalism. Companies don’t have to struggle to raise massive amounts of capital for assets. Investors can buy safer govt backed bonds to fun these projects, and still take equity investments  in the companies they feel would do a good job.
The net couple of years will be rough, thats for sure. But nothing jump starts an economy like infrastructure projects. Roads, rail, communications and energy.
Now on to education, and lets start with college. My thought is this, for every year that you do national service, being military or peace corps or whatever that qualifies, you get a year of collect at any public institution, room and board, books, tuition and even some pocket money, up to six years. Higher education is a key for this country if we’re to maintain our competitive edge. The idea that we can continue to build our country on lower skilled jobs is long gone.
For our community college system, a person should be able to retrain into a new career if they get laid off, or sector is collapsing. How often, I don’t know, but I think that should be funded also.
Onto elementary through high school. Adopt the model like they have in the Netherlands. Attach the dollars to the child vs. the school. This allow the parent to choose where their child goes. If the parents/guardian wants their child to go to public, or private, religious, secular, magnet, of whatever type of approved school, their choice. This will instantly create competition within schools, and nothing spurs true innovation like competition.
Make english the national language, officially. If you come here and want to live here, you need to learn the language. I would suggest that libraries and community colleges in every county provide english classes at govt. cost. This would be offset by the elimination of duplicated paperwork in many agencies in multiple languages.
Home mortgage and banking crisis. If any bank gets any money for bailout, they have to immediately convert every adjustable rate mortgage to a fixed 30 year at 6%, done, end of story. And foreclosures are frozen for the next 120 days. Now after that, if a person cannot afford what they live in on their new fixed rate, then unfortunately market rules apply….foreclose.
And for the most painful, all these CDO’s and credit default swaps, essentially these unregulated insurance policies? Every last one of them…null and void. You’re an investor and had the money to burn, oh well. But we need to move forward.
Look for my enlightening thoughts on taxes and healthcare in a later email.

A Measurement of Family Values

All I can say is man, this guy’s a stud. Having an affair with an affairee over your affairrer? Double dipping, burning the candle at both wicks. Which beings me to a question here. Ever notice that when Democrats have an affair, they get caught with a woman, or several. But when Republicans get busted, it’s usually the material for the midday talkshows? Busted in bathrooms with other men, or running around D.C. after 16 year old pages. What gives? It seems that while both sides have nothing to hold their heads up against, the Dems do rank a few points higher on the family right wing values scale. They’re at least doing it with women.

Sorry, couldn’t resist, just an observation, it’s 1:30am and I’m sleepy….

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A married congressman who faces accusations that he had an affair with a former aide and paid her to keep quiet about it also was having an affair with a second woman around the same time, a person close to his campaign told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Details of the second affair came hours after Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney held a news conference to address a story, first reported by ABC News, that he had been involved with the former aide. Mahoney acknowledged he had caused “embarrassment and heartache” to his family but denied doing anything illegal.

The Associated Press: Fla. Congressman said to be involved in 2nd affair.

McCain Blinks…Game of Chicken Fails

The Battle in the Bayou is set for tonight ……..

McCain blinks after Obama calls his bluff. And to think that McCain thought he could get away with this stunt. After is was clearly visible that he was politicizing the campaign suspension and that he had absolutely significant value to the economic crisis that he can claim, he regrettably will go to the debate kicking and screaming.

I’m breaking out the popcorn for this one. I think this debate will define the election and determine who will go to the White House. I think McCain showed some real bad judgement and fumbling, and grandstanding and it backfired. While Obama played it cool and level headed. The point was simple. Congress already has enough key folks working on this, probably too many, and adding to that number would be more negative than positive, as we’ve recently seen. McCain couldn’t even do anything with own party, so what does he plan to do as president?

What I want to hear tonight is each persons direct beliefs, and plans, and why their plans for major issues facing this country. The economy and regulation, healthcare, education, infrastructure, energy, small business support, taxes, government intrusion into personal lives, the church and state debate, national security, political reform and our judicial system. And I will be posting my beliefs and what should be done on each of these shortly.

Senator John McCain’s campaign said Friday morning that he will attend tonight’s debate with Senator Barack Obama at the University of Mississippi, reversing his earlier call to postpone the debate so he could participate in the Congressional negotiations over the $700 billion bailout plan for financial firms.

Moments after Senator McCain ended several of days of suspense and announced that he would participate in the debate after all, the doors of his campaign plane were opened and the steps were down, as Mr. Obama’s 757 idled nearby on the runway at Ronald Reagan National Airport outside Washington, according to a pool report. Both planes were set to arrive in Memphis on Friday afternoon.

McCain's Debate Victory Ad …no seriously !!!

Really, this campaign has gone too far. Now they had a ad on WSJ Online showing that he won the debate. Ar these folks for real? The add has since been removed, but the Washington Post has a full screenshot of it. But I’m posting here in case it disappears from there too. I mean, how bold are these folks anyway. Posting an ad that you’ve won a debate that you ducked out of? Posting an ad that you’ve won a debate that hasn’t taken place yet? The Obama campaign should totally pounce on this. Not to mention that since he suspended his campaign, McCain still found the time to stop over NY to give a speech at an event, before going “directly” to Washington to “lead” the initiative to solve the crisis. And also, for the debate, it only requires six hours of his time. Two hours to fly to the debate, two hours to debate, and two hours to fly back to Washington to “lead” the crisis bailout. He’d be back in Washington really quick. Besides, isn’t the debate where you’d want to get your message out to the people and how you differ from your candidate?

YouTube – McCains Ambition: In His Own Words

So from Senator John McCain’s book, “Worth The Fighting For”, he candidly tells what for him anyway, running for president is all about. It’s also in audio book for, so you can hear in his own voice, what’s written below. In his own words and voice, he explains that it’s not about the American people, it’s all about him. I guess this explains why he’s abandoned his principles over the years and caved. It’s all about going to the White House, a personal triumph.

“I didn’t decide to run for President to start a national crusade for the political reforms I believed in or to run a campaign as if it were some grand act of patriotism. In truth, I wanted to be president because it had become my ambition to be president. I was sixty-two years old when I made the decision and I thought it was my one shot at the prize”
