The Winter Casualty
So here in North Carolina we have no need to winterize, generally. But this has been a different winter so I winterized parts of the boat, along with running heat in key areas. One area I forgot about was the head. Let’s just say that the joker valve is laughing. Water in the system probable drone around the valve and its now docked. So today, I’ll literally be in a crappy situation as I change it out, and I just changed it last fall.
Really missing Hemispheres right about now
This crazy winter we’ve had, my work travel and other commitments are taking its toll. Will burn some vacation days this month to get some time with her.
Just got a visit from AT&T..too funny
So there’s a knock on the door. It’s an AT&T U-Verse representative, and really pushy. He’s here to graciousLy inform me that my subdivision is being upgraded and that gigabit service will be available to me within the month. So he asks who I have now which I inform him that I used to have Uverse, but am now on TWC for broadband only, not interested in TV or phone. Asking me why I left Uverse, I simply explained that at the time, they didn’t have the speeds that I wanted and there were too many outages. Also explained that I’m with TWC for now, but will be moving to Google Fiber as its coming too.
Then it gets weird. He asks if I run a business at home, because the new Gb Uverse service is for people who have five or more servers at home (and can’t image what that will cost), and for residential at 45Mb is now available. I’m thinking, why the hell did this guy stop at my house?
Then the aggressive sales pitch begin. “Well, if you don’t want the free installation that we’re currently doing along with the free TV set we’re including with this deal, then I guess I’ll need to go to your next door neighbor and offer it to them since you don’t want it”.
My response? “OK, bye, I’ll wait for Google Fiber….”
This Just In – Ted Cruz didn’t know he was Canadian
Wow, is this guy mixed up. He’s now renouncing his Canadian citizenship saying he didn’t know he was a Canadian citizen because he was born in Canada? Wait, what?
Anyway, I find it amusing that his situation directly parallels President Obama where his mother is American and his father is a foreigner. Slight difference though as Obama was born on US soil, Cruz was born on US Oil territory soil (Canada). Oddly, there’s no firestorm over at Fox News about this.
All of a sudden, after deciding to run for president, patriotism kicks in and he declares he’s only American. After all these years. Actually, I hope this crackpot wins the Republican nomination. America needs a wakeup call.

The Goal is Not the Point – A great article by James Clear
Having subscribed to his email list a while back, I occasionally read through them, admitting that I sometimes gloss over the subject and move on because I’m more interested with Inbox_Zero, or cleaning out my inbox. But this title caught my attention, especially with where I am in my life, with what my goals and expectations are. And mainly where I want to be.
It’s a quick read but definitely hits the point and provides a great perspective, if not instruction. It was as though it was meant to land in my inbox this week and its truly perfect timing. Definitely well worth the read and I’d encourage anyone in the so called “mid-life crisis”, or what I call, mid-life awakening, to check out.

And the other Cloud Shoe has fallen – Separate AWS Numbers
So starting this quarter (Q1-15), Amazon Web Services will be broken out as a separate segment for reporting. To me this says that it’s now a fully viable, self sustainable business that is generating significant revenue. I’m interested to see top line revenue and operating margin and what their cost of doing business is as it should be really interesting.
Expect cloud companies to be all over this with their spin. You can expect companies like IBM to pad their cloud results with everything they can throw in there to claim they’re larger. Many other companies will look at the overall market and say, “hey, see, not a big deal, small numbers relative to the overall market” and other blah, blah, blah stuff.
But what I really expect to see are large telcos looking at the viability of large scale public clouds that they can leverage for high margin managed services. We’re seeing this initiative today, even with AWS themselves going after the enterprise space with their partner network and managed offering. Stay tuned folks, it’s about to get interesting….
We expect to change our reportable segments to report North America, international and Amazon Web Services, beginning with first quarter of 2015.

The best article I’ve read about blogging
With talking about writing an blogging, I found this article very insightful and helpful. It provides a great perspective and meaning to writing, it’s importance as an art form, and what your motivation should really be when writing. It’s not about fame, not about building an audience, and not about monetization. Writing is simply about expressing yourself, sharing your thoughts with like minded people, and also opposing views people. It’s to foster dialog, inform and communicate. Like the arts with music or video or photography, it’s your outlet and your transparent exposure of who you are. In reading this article, it has answered some of my questions of why I wanted to blog, and what is the true importance of blogging to myself. Good read, enjoy.

It just amazes me how some people who are obviously smart and successful (based on how you measure it) can be so dense, absurd, or resemble the extremely uneducated by their comments.
To profess that an entire religion of people should be held responsible is like me holding all my fellow Christians for lynchings done by the KKK. I wonder if he really believes this or is he just stirring the pot, good for ratings. After all, “news” and controversy is good for business.
