Ford Labor Contract Hits Another Snag – WSJ.com

Unions are at it again. With millions of people out of work, they feel they have the luxury for unrealistic demands like guaranteed jobs and no personal responsibility regarding their healthcare. I think Ford should hire anyone off the street that wants a job and provide a quick training course specific to the job function. Eight week apprentice program them full time employment.

DETROIT — Ford Motor Co.s chances of getting a ratified contract with members of the United Auto Workers union grew dimmer as another local shot down the tentative four-year contract.Local 892, which represents workers at an interior-parts plant in Saline, Mich., turned down the contract, according to an email sent to workers at the plant. This defeat comes after locals in Chicago …

Unions on strike at Verizon, here’s a solution

So let’s see. There are millions of unemployed people in America, and many with a good education and learning skills. The unions at Verizon just went on strike, 45,000 of them. In a nutshell, what do they want? They want to be paid regardless of their performance, and want guarantees in compensation and benefits, whether the company is doing well or not.

I suggest putting a sign out front saying “we’re hiring, and throwing in six weeks of telecom training for the job”. For people who really want to work and earn a fair wage commensurate to their education and the job requirements, hire them, train them and let them work. Let the union members who strike because they want pay and benefits above the fair value of the job sit on the sidelines. And they better NOT be collecting my tax dollars down the road for unemployment and healthcare.

With so many people out of work, these union managers should be ashamed as they only help themselves, not their members.

Workers should be paid for the amount of work they do, especially in telecom, which by the way is a utility service and is measured as such. Get paid per ticket or work order. Do more, get paid more, do less, get paid less. We’ve all seen those telecom trucks parked on the corner near our subdivisions or streets, where the guy gets out after sitting in his truck for 30 minutes, performs a work order, then returns to his truck for another 30 or so minutes before driving off to his next location. As a telecommuter, I see this a lot, work for 20 minutes and sit in the truck the next hour because they’re part of a union.

Moved My Blog

Well, finally decided to move my blog from self-hosted to wordpress.com. Just exploring now but there are some really nice features of hosting here. This now means I have a Linux VM that I can turn down and no longer manage. My on-premise consolidation is almost complete. All data moved to the DroboFS and machines still being turned down and consolidated.

I got my Google Music Beta Invite…whoppie!!!

So let me understand this correctly. I’ve brought this up before. There was a service called SimplifyMedia, that in many opinions, was probably the best personal streaming and sharing application for your personal music collection. Google purchased the company and shut down the service. The result?

Google Music. Where I would have to spend the next several weeks uploading my music just to listen to it remotely. Also, no native iPhone or iPad app, just a web interface. How the heck do you purchase something and the result is of less quality and functionality than what you bought? I think I’ll pass and wait for iCloud.

Music Beta.

PNC to buy RBC Bank USA, time to go elsewhere

Well, looks like a great customer relationship focused bank is coming to a close. I’ve banked with RBC for many, many years, mainly because they were a community focused bank, even after Royal Bank of Canada purchased them. Apparently, RBC wasn’t making much money off the purchase, which would explain RBC Bank’s good service, they spent their money focused on customers.

Now it seems that RBC of Canada is dumping their investment, and selling it off to PNC. For PNC to make this profitable, they’ll most likely have to cut staff, skimp n services and reduce the quality of customer service and that personal relationship. Essentially, following the Bank of America roadmap to effective banking. We’ll see how long it takes before customer satisfaction goes south and I look for another small bank.

PNC Welcomes RBC Bank USA CustomersToday we announced that PNC Bank, a member of The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc. NYSE: PNC, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire RBC Bank USA, the U.S. subsidiary of Royal Bank of Canada.

Apple faces questions from Congress about iPhone tracking – Computerworld

So the FCC and now Congress want to question Apple about the stored GPS data on their phones. First, I don’t think Apple is the only company that is secretly doing this. Second, if they want to get to the root of the issue, I’d suggest that they take a trip across the street to the Justice Dept., the FBI, NSA and other agencies that probably have known all along and probable requested it, since they’re the ones that routinely obsess with finding ways around the 4th amendment.

Sen. Al Franken D.-Minn., who chairs a new privacy panel set up in February, yesterday asked Apple to explain why its iPhones are tracking users locations. The Federal Communications Commission FCC is also reportedly looking into the matter, while a Congressman from Washington State has followed Frankens lead, promising to ask questions of his own.Frankens letter to Apple CEO Steve Jobs came after a pair of British researchers reported Wednesday that iPhones and 3G iPads running iOS 4 logged up to 100 location entries daily.

Time for a crazy rant on the City of Raleigh

Ok, a Saturday evening rant. Just paid this months water bill and noticed that water usage is now tiered. 4.533 CCF at $2.28 for usage tier one. Then we used 1.467 CCF @ 3.80 for tier two. But waste water usage is a flat tier @ $2.42. At least they don’t charge for extra craps you take. But wait a minute, tiering water? Isn’t water essentially a utility, you pay for what you consume? Having tiering doesn’t foster conservation. If you have to shower, you shower. Nobody is going to use the toilet twice before flushing to save a gallon of water. Not yet anyway.

If you have a family, you obviously consume more water than a single guy who’s at home every night playing WoW. So this tiering of water usage is discriminatory. It adversely affects families and especially those of low incomes. The City of Raleigh has an anti-family water policy! No other way to view it.

Then to top it off, there’s the Water Administration fee. There is also a separate Waste Water Administration fee. Knowing local government, it’s probably separate departments, where the bill gets processed twice with redundant workers.

Quantitive Easing Explained

While this clip is funny, it’s also a serious topic and a clear example of why the Federal Reserve is a really bad idea. Ron and Rand Paul are correct, the FED needs to be disbanded. Quantitive Easing, a nice and non threatening name for the truth of printing cash out of thin air. The prelude to any economic collapse, as shown throughout history.

But the troubling thing is that the Fed puts money into the economy not by purchasing Treasury securities direct from the Treasury, but by going through a broker like Goldman Sachs. Yes, you read that correctly. You and I can purchase treasuries directly from the Treasury at face value, but the Fed purchases them at a marked up price through Goldman Sachs, and the tax payer is stuck with the bill. Troublesome, just troublesome.

Goog-izon offer a "don't touch me" plan

So reading between the lines, here’s the skinny. Verizon and Google are willing to concede to FCC regulatory control of fixed line broadband and not jack up content providers over bandwidth. Why, because maybe fixed line isn’t as profitable. But where they want hands off is with wireless, where there is plenty of growth and lots of margin. Fixed line is capital intensive and mainly labor intensive, especially with union workers sitting in trucks for forty minutes between each work order. Did I just say that and drift into another topic?

According to the proposal, Internet service providers would not be able to block producers of online content or offer them a paid “fast lane.” It says the Federal Communications Commission should have the authority to stop or fine any rule-breakers.The proposal, however, carves out exceptions for Internet access over cellphone networks, and for potential new services that broadband providers could offer. In a joint blog post, the companies said these could include things like health care monitoring, “advanced educational services, or new entertainment and gaming options.”

Obama to deliver major education reform address, I'm not expecting much and heres why

The President will be making a speech today at the National Urban League, so I don’t expect much other than pandering. Education is in a real bind and frankly, there are already simple and innovative solutions out there. First, the biggest hinderance to education reform are the various teachers unions. Now, I’m not attacking them but just point things out.

Let’s follow the system in Denmark, where funding per child is not given directly to a school district, but instead is assigned to the parent or guardian, who in turn decides where to send their child, and applies those funds to that school. If the parent chooses a private, public, religious or secular school, their choice. What this fosters is a competitive environment and spurs innovation. Todays system lacks innovation and accountability simply because it doesn’t have to. Regardless of how it performs, people still get paid, with guarantees on salary, earlier retirement and job security.

There was a segment on 20/20 some years back that talked about the Denmark(?) system and how it worked. As a result of their initiative, public schools were on par with private schools, were just as innovative and had equal achievements. I would love to be able to choose what school our boys go to, and what curriculum they had.

Another issue is these bad a** kids and their parents who apparently don’t know what to do or simply don’t care. I scratch my head when I see a child that is on reduced lunch, but their parent shows up to a school event with custom nails, expensive handbags and clothing, driving a Mercedes. It happens more than not, where some parents use the schools as their dumping grounds. I once heard a parent tell a teacher “he’s your problem now….”, while dropping off their child. I am not making that one up….

Here in Wake County, NC., there is a real issue around school diversity and busing vs. local schools. Now personally, I support local schools vs. busing kids half way across the county to achieve diversity. People choose where they want to live and is primarily based on economic status and what they can achieve. Can’t fault people for that. To achieve equal opportunity for all kids, you should’t have to upset half the families by shuffling their kids to create diversity. New schools should not be built until all existing schools are maintained and upgraded to the standards of a new school. This keeps the facilities on par. Next, there is a fixed amount of funding per student.

Now, for poor behaving students in schools, I’m sorry but that is where parent involvement comes in. At some point, instead of looking outwards to resolve problems, you have to look inwards.

So with regards to segregation that the NAACP is talking about in Wake County schools, the most segregated time in the county is Sunday mornings. So if that can’t be resolved what makes you think anything else can be resolved. Just my opinion.

I would love to be able to get a letter in the mail with a voucher, then interview various schools, and send our boys to where WE feel would suit them best and derive the best value and education. Instead, we’re stuck with, here’s your assigned school, deal with it….

Washington CNN — President Obama will deliver a major education reform speech at the National Urban Leagues 100th Anniversary Convention in Washington Thursday morning. The president will discuss how his signature Race to the Top program and other initiatives are driving education reform across the country and focusing the nation on the goal of preparing students for college and careers, a statement from White House said.”Now, I know some argue that during a recession, we should focus solely on economic issues,” Obama says in prepared remarks released by the White House ahead of the address. “But education is an economic issue — if not the economic issue of our time.”The Obama education plan champions better teacher pay, but also asks for tangible results.”I want teachers to have higher salaries. I want them to have more support. I want them to be trained like the professionals they are — with rigorous residencies like the ones doctors go through,” Obama says. “All Im asking in return — as a president, and as a parent — is a measure of accountability.
